The Captain Merry Bed and Breakfast: An Incredible Overnight Getaway
By Brent R. Brodeski
Who would have imagined that sleepy little East Dubuque, IL would be home to what may be the nicest bed and breakfast, restaurant, and full service Salon & Spa in the Midwest? Originally a mansion built by Captain Merry, a Mississippi riverboat captain in the mid 1800s, today’s proprietors, Bob and Bethany offer guests five of the most unique and lavish theme rooms (French, English, Garden Suite, Egyptian, and Mediterranean), a world-class dining experience, top wines, art-filled walls, and relaxing spa treatments. East Dubuque is located on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River and is five minutes from both Dubuque, Iowa and the Wisconsin border. By day, historic Galena, IL offers shopping, golf, balloon rides, and more only 15 minutes east on Highway 20. Just over the bridge in Dubuque, IA you can gamble at Diamond Joe’s Casino or go to the Mississippi River Museum. A paddlewheel riverboat cruise may be in the cards on a warm summer day.
But make sure to hold back plenty of time to just hang out at the mansion. You are certain to enjoy what the author of "The Starbucks Experience," Joseph Michelli, said regarding his recent experience at The Captain Merry. "The Captain Merry was a truly memorable experience. It was the ultimate combination of an historic property, elegant and refined renovation, and world class service. I will never forget my stay at the Captain Merry or the service excellence of their staff."
Suites cost between $99 to $329 per night—a steal given similar rooms in Chicago would likely cost five to ten times more.
